Each fall, FFA members gather together at Utterback's Shooting range for trapshooting practice. At the beginning of August, FFA pre-trap practices begin. Pre-trap practices are a chance for members to learn or refresh their trapshooting skills. These practices do not count toward the team qualifying scores. After the first day of school, team qualifier practices begin. At each practice, members must bring their own shells, but FFA covers two rounds of targets. Their score out of 50 shots is recorded. The top 10 students with the highest scores each week will be invited to that Saturday's trapshooting contest. The top 10 students out of 200 shots represent South Shelby at the Area 3 FFA competition.
